Unique Places in Singapore
#1: 罗弄万国村 - Kampong Lorong Buangkok (Kampong Selak Kain)
In the past, there were many kampongs scattered all around in Singapore. The rapid development Singapore have made over the years towards a more urban city, the Singapore government start building HDBs flats resulting in kampongs being outcasted.
Today, there are two kampongs that still exists, one is palau ubin and the other is located in Buangkok in Hougang Singapore called Kampong Lorong Buangkok also known as Kampong Selak Kain in Malay. The kampong is owned by Sng Mui Hong. There are less than 30 families living in the kampong and she rents the kampong at an extremely low price to the villagers. In an interview, she says that’s everyone that lives in the kampong are like family.
What’s different and unique about Kampong Lorong Buangkok is that just like in the past, there are no barriers between the relationships of the different households, and everyone is extremely close. Nowadays, many of us are not close to our neighbours, some don’t even say “hello” when they walk past each other! This is, something very precious that we have lost, which makes Kampung Lorong Buangkok even more unique!
#2: 乌敏岛 - Palau Ubin
As everyone should know by now, Singapore is just a little red dot on the world map. Though small in size, we do have many islands for everyone to explore. Palau Ubin, is one of the unique places in Singapore where you can find serenity away from a bustling citylife. To get to Palau Ubin, we would need to take a boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal!
What’s different from that island is that there are no big factories or great infrastructure over there. The environment around there is Singapore in the early days! Many people goes to Palau Ubin to cycle as well as just hand around there reminiscing the days back then. There are many wild animals and old Kampong houses over there as well! Palau Ubin is also a tourist attraction!
#3: 牛车水 - Chinatown
A place that many people will visit in Chinatown is the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple! It is a popular tourist spot for many tourists and a popular place for locals as well! In chinatown, you’ll be able to see many things related to the chinese culture as well as many places of worship. In chinatown, you’ll be able to learn and know more about the chinese culture and the different delicacies that the chinese have! For a better experience, I would recommend you to go during the Chinese New Year festive period as there’ll be many events and things going on!
#4 : 甘榜格南 – Kampong Glam
When I was still in primary school, my school had a learning journey to Kampong Glam. At that time, I was shocked to learn about Kampong Glam in Singapore, and was curious as to what kind of place it is! When I went home, I asked my mum about Kampong Glam. She asked “If there is Chinatown for the Chinese, Little India for the Indians, how about the Malays?”
I still remember when I first got to Kampong Glam, it was also the first time I stepped into a Mosque, the entire trip was surely an eyeopener for me as I’ve learnt so many things about Singapore and the Malay’s culture that I’ve never knew before! To me, this is definitely one of the most unique places in Singapore.
#5 : 小印度 – Little India
Every year during Deepavali, Little India will filled with many people! What’s unique about Little India is that they sell many spices over there that is not available in our everyday supermarkets! Not only that, in Little India, we can learn many things about the Indian culture as well! Personally, when I go to Little India, I like to go to the different places of worship! It is always interesting to see how different religions is like and learn more about their traditional customs!
