On 8th February, we kicked off our first Jubilant Club event of 2026: “字里行间的新年” (Lunar New Year Between the Lines).
At Jocelyn Chinese Learning Centre (JCLC), we believe that the most profound learning happens when the walls of the classroom disappear. The Jubilant Club is our signature initiative designed to take Chinese literacy into the real world. Whether it’s exploring the history of Chinatown, discussing wildlife conservation after a trip to the Zoo, or mastering character descriptions through a Journey to the West Escape Room, we ensure every “Learning Journey” has a practical academic heartbeat.
Our Lunar New Year session this time round was no different, blending ancient art of calligraphy with the “JCLC Twist.”
1. Art with an Academic Purpose
Calligraphy is often viewed as a quiet, meditative art. But at Jocelyn Chinese, it’s a high-level vocabulary workshop in disguise.
Instead of just copying characters, our students learned how to weave the very phrases they painted—such as 心想事成 (May your heart’s desires come true)—into their narrative essays. By physically guiding the brush, they internalized the structure and spirit of these idioms, moving them from “memorized words” to “active vocabulary.”
2. Progress You Can See (At a Glance!)
One of our core missions at JCLC is ensuring student growth is visible and timely. By comparing their initial drafts to their final couplets, we can see that students are able to master the foundation of stroke precision for calligraphy.
It was heartening to see students resist the urge to rush. By taking the time to master each stroke, they demonstrated the disciplined work ethic we cultivate in our regular lessons, proving that quality work is worth the wait.
3. Meaningful CNY: Culture as a Superpower
In an age of digital screens, taking the time to hand-write a Lunar New Year wish is a truly a meaningful act. By teaching students to incorporate these traditional greetings into their modern writing, we are giving them a cultural superpower: the ability to communicate with depth, respect, and sophistication.
The Jubilant Insight
Our workshops—from Escape Rooms to Calligraphy—turn abstract concepts into lived experiences. When a student uses a Zoo trip to ace a conservation-themed Oral Exam, or a Calligraphy session to elevate an essay, that is when true mastery happens.
What’s Next for the Jubilant Club?
We aren’t stopping at the inkwell! We remain committed to showing our students that academic success and cultural appreciation are two sides of the same coin. Jubilant Club will continue to run after the Lunar New Year break.
