According to Wikipedia (“Politics”, n.d.), “Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations between individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status.”
What is the link between Youth and politics? Why should we be concerned?
Politics in Singapore
In my opinion, there are 5 main political parties in Singapore all Youths should learn about. They are the People’s Action Party (PAP), Progress Singapore Party (PSP), The Workers’ party (WP), Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and Singapore People’s Party (SPP).
Now that you know these 5 parties, do you know which is our ruling party? Do comment down below and let me know your answer!
During the elections, aren’t you curious about the two different constituencies Group Representation Constituencies (GRC) and Single Member Constituencies (SMC)? To put in simpler terms, GRC means that a group of Members of Parliament (MP) are running for the particular district while there’ll only be one MP in SMCs.
Myths about Politics
We would always hear some adults mention comments like “Politicians are all the same” and “our votes don’t matter”.
Are you always clueless when adults say this? I believe that they have this mindset because their wants or needs are often perceived as unfulfilled. However, we have to know for a fact that not everyone’s wish can be granted. Politicians are trying to make decisions that will benefit the society in general.
*These are also the different stereotypes that people have about politics
Youth should be concerned about politics
我相信大家都有听过“Every vote counts!”这句话。事实上，这句话说的一点儿也没错！
I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase “Every vote counts!” True enough, the fate of our progress as a nation lies in the hands of all citizens. So how exactly does politics affect us?
Politics affects our everyday lives. The taxes that our parents pay and the transport fees that we pay are all affected by politics. Leaders chosen by the people decide how our future will be shaped. Hence, voting is of utmost importance.
Knowing that the leaders we choose will affect our lives, it is then important to know what each party has to offer. We can then match our needs so that improvements can be made to our lives in Singapore. Furthermore, as future leaders of this nation, it is important to understand politics so as to better fight for our rights!
At Jocelyn Chinese Tuition, we go through different current affairs topic every week. This really helped to broaden my perspectives about different policies. I strongly urge everyone to read widely and, if possible, read news articles on a daily basis to better understand the world around us!
Youth should not be concerned about politics
To many parents, they think that their children are too young to be involved in politics. In fact, anyone below the age of 21 will not be allowed to vote in the elections. It thus seem like there isn’t a need for youths to be aware of politics.
However, I still think that it is always better to be informed about current affairs, and that includes politics. The sooner we get into contact with the things around us, the faster we will be able to know more about the reality of life and who knows, having this knowledge may help us in getting a job sooner and help us in our decision-making! During Chinese lessons, we get to discuss current affairs in Chinese language and also get exposed to different sources. Not only does this train our language, it also strengthens our analytical skills when reading different articles. This will be exceptionally important in future when we step into the real world.
I personally think that there is no harm in letting teens know more about politics and how it works. Afterall, the leader that we choose are going to affect us in many different ways and it is only right to be properly educated on what each party have to offer us so that our lives will only be better. Also, being in touch with current affairs is very important. The current affairs discussions conducted at Jocelyn Chinese Tuition help us get in touch with relevant news! I hope that everyone can cultivate the habit of reading news and start doing our part for the nation’s future!
