The words “great” and “selfless” are often seen put together with “motherly love”, but have you ever thought of it together with “fatherly love”? Father’s Day is arriving round the corner, yet we seem to always be oblivious to the type of love fathers give. Parents are probably the biggest support pillars of a family and oftentimes, the one playing the role of the breadwinner are fathers. I believe that many of your fathers, like mine, just aren’t good at expressing their love towards their children. Instead, they choose to do it through actions. No matter how harsh and cold they sound, their actions stay warm. Today’s blog, just like the Mother’s Day blog, would not contain any tips and tricks on how to celebrate and all. Instead, it will just be a simple sharing, where the style is pretty similar!
Story Time | 故事时间
Please, take the time to think back now. Each time you have some work that requires a certain amount of strength, who do you ask for help? When insects fly into your house, who do you ask for help? When you need money (though it might not really be your fathers, but at least for me, it was), who do you ask for it from? I believe most of the answers are the same, your fathers. Like I said, many of them express their love for us through action.
For instance, where I stay, I live on a relatively high level. This means that my house constantly has uninvited guests like insects and bugs. You might be thinking, they’re harmless. How scary could they be? Well, my house is surrounded by gardens, where the insects are quite huge in size. Additionally, I’m not a fan of insects myself, I find them disgusting, and these incidents happened frequently when I was younger. Every time an insect flew in, I’d call for my father to catch it. He’d always nag about how it’s harmless, but would still catch it without hesitation. Now, insects are mostly harmless indeed, but their creepy figures are scary to a child. Also, not all insects are harmless! Some, like the dengue mosquito, may cause dengue fevers. As such, it is always times like this where I feel a huge sense of security from my father.
To be fair, a lot of the times where we felt warmth wasn’t from our father’s actions, but rather the spirit and non-hesitant love that comes off of it. I believe many of you have heard of similar lines saying, no matter how hard it is outside, always remember to come home. That’s because home is like a big fireplace in winter, always providing us with warmth, and like a sanctuary, it protects us from thunderstorms.. Yes, the outside world is scary with many things we aren’t sure about. However, when you think back and realise that your father is always there to protect you and provide a sense of security, the world actually isn’t that scary at all.
Show Your Love | 表达爱意
Even if our fathers do not know how to express their love, it doesn’t mean that we don’t either! The first and easiest way would probably be to say the three words, “I love you”. In the Mother’s Day blog that I wrote, I mentioned that these three words may seem easy, but are often the ones that are the hardest to say. However, as their children, how could we easily forgo such a basic way of expressing our love? If it’s hard for you to say it out, you can opt to do it through a card, or a text. It might not seem sincere, but it’s the thought that counts. I believe that in your parents’ hearts, as long as it comes from you, these three words are probably the most sincere gift they have ever received! Besides, whatever three words your mother received, your father should too! (Oh and if you haven’t read my blog on Mother’s Day, do so here!)
There’s also another way to show your love. Just like our fathers, if you can’t express it verbally, do it through action! Cook up a simple breakfast, a heavy lunch or a heart warming dinner for your father (and mother). Actions like these count as showing your love towards them. Additionally, helping out with household chores, not retaliating when they correct you, are some of the greatest ways we can give back to them for bringing us up. Parents don’t actually ask much from their children, just for them to be good kids. In fact, did you know, these daily activities are how most of us show our love to them. So, what are you waiting for? Do something this Father’s Day!
A Simple Note | 一小段话
To all Fathers in the world:
Thank you for the non-hesitant love and protection that you have given us. On our path of growing up, you are just like the army who protect citizens on a daily basis, forever putting us ahead of yourselves. Without you, our paths wouldn’t be so smooth and instead would probably even be filled with darkness. Thank you so much!
