Current Affairs (Mental Health)

This week on current affairs discussion, we are looking at the theme of Building an Inclusive Society. During the class discussions, we have raised many valuable and thought-provoking points that are worth sharing. Hence, the post below contains different views raised by students with regards to the topic. Do take some time to read through and share your opinion!

Singapore has been trying to build an inclusive society for many years. However, we often find that many in society are still biased against some groups of people. Are we truly able to empathize and accept all differences? What can we do as individuals to help reach out to those who are struggling?

To start the conversation, we take a look at mental health awareness in Singapore. For many years now, mental health issue has often been shunned by the public. It seems to be a taboo or even brushed off as something minor whenever it’s brought up in conversations. Many even expressed that they would avoid people diagnosed with mental health problems, for fear that the “lunatics will harm them”. However, are mental health patients truly unable to interact with people? Do they really need to be ‘quarantined’?

Most importantly, what can WE do if our family and friends are dealing with mental health issues?
