HOW WILL WE BE TESTED? 考查方式
Chinese Oral Exam Format
Let’s look at the Chinese oral examination format and marks distribution.
Reading – 10 marks (5% of overall)
Conversation – 40 marks (20% of overall)
With 10 minutes of preparation time, it is important for us to manage our pace and time allocation well. Looking at the marks allocation, we should spend more time on the video/conversation component of the exam. Think about what you have to say for the theme highlighted in the Chinese oral video, and prepare the content beforehand.
CHINESE ORAL READING 朗读技巧
1. PREPARATION 准备过程Read the passage once through and familiarize yourself with the content. Try to identify the words that you’re unfamiliar with and make a mental note. During the reading segment, try as best as possible to pronounce these words with confidence. Spend around 2 minutes for this component.
2. PRONUNCIATION VS FLOW 读音 VS 流利度Don’t expect a miracle to happen in the span of few minutes. If you do not know how to pronounce some of the different words, chances are that you would still stumble by the end of the examination. Therefore, instead of fumbling at these words, try to guess their pronunciation and stick with it. The key is to project your voice and not eat your words.
Focus on the flow of your reading instead of the pronunciation. Not only will this improve your flow of reading, it will also boost your confidence as you read without random pauses.
CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS 会话技巧
1. STRUCTURE YOUR ANSWERS 答题时注意结构
Boost your confidence level by falling back on familiar structures that you have learnt over the last 4-5 years. At Jocelyn Chinese, we train students to structure answers using the PEEL and SPEAK format.
2. IMPORTANCE OF CITING EXAMPLES 结合真实例子阐述观点
Other than stating your point of view directly, do cite examples to relate the topic to your daily lives. Elaborate on your answers instead of just answering directly to the question. Feel free to share your feelings about the topic as well. This will ensure the quality of your answer and also help you convey your point in a clear manner during the Chinese oral exam.
Do elaborate on your answers by sharing more details (5W1H). Feel free to use relevant keywords in your answers to better relate to the theme. Keywords used in the narration of the Chinese oral video can be applied in your conversation as well.
Compare Answer (1) and Answer (2), both answers included examples and their opinions. However, Answer (2) gave more details and therefore offered a clearer picture of the point of view.
