How NDP (Singapore National Day Parade) was like in the past
How NDP is like in the present
How NDP is different in 2020 due to COVID-19
I’m sure all of you here know when Singapore’s national day is! For those who are not sure, Singapore’s national day falls on the 9th of August. Do you know how old is Singapore? Comment down below!
Together, A Stronger Singapore is the theme for this year’s NDP. In this blog, I’ll be talking about 2 things. Firstly, I’ll be talking about how Singapore gained independence back in 1965. (oops, I actually gave the answer to how old Singapore is!)
Let’s not drag on any further and get into the tea!
Backstory of Singapore’s independence
From 1942 to 1945, Singapore endured a difficult period of the Japanese Occupation. In 1963, Singapore merged with Malaysia. However due to many conflicts and dispute, we went separate ways and in 1965, Singapore gained independence.
NDP in the early days
The first NDP celebrated in 1966 took place at the Padang. Floats were also one of the biggest highlights in the past. As the years passed by, more people attended the NDP.
In year 2003, the government introduced the electronic voting ticketing system where Singaporeans had to ballot for tickets in order to attend the Singapore National Day Parade. From the initial venue at Padang, to the National Stadium, year 2007 was when Singapore started to hold its NDP at the floating platform @ Marina.
NDP in the Present
The NDP now is mostly held at the floating platform @ Marina. Every year, we can always see many people gathered around the Merlion Park, Marina Bay Sands, Marina Barrage as well as all the nearby shopping centres enjoying the NDP from afar.
Fun Fact: Do you know during the NDP rehearsal every year, every student in Primary 5 from all across Singapore will have a chance to attend the rehearsal parade?
NDP in year 2020
Due to COVID-19 this year, Singapore would not be able to hold a grand event like in the past. Instead of gathering at the floating platform @ Marina, this year, Singaporeans will be watching the live broadcast from home.
The celebration has also been toned down to a smaller scale instead of the usual one. So what can we expect from this year’s NDP? Firstly, every household will be entitled to one funpack! Inside the funpack, there are stuff like face mask, Singapore flag and many more! This year’s NDP will be held at the parade @ Padang. What’s different in our Singapore National Day Parade this year is that not only does everyone has to maintain safe-distancing, there are also some changes to the event. For example, there’ll be a show held @ The Star Theatre broadcast on the television and internet. (For the full list, click here)
Previously, be it rain or shine, the NDP still carries on as usual. This year is the first year that Singaporeans are celebrating National Day at home! How exciting is that? Are you looking forward to it as well?
Do you know that this year’s NDP is also split into two shows? They are categorized into the Morning and Evening sessions!
If you haven’t listened to our 2020 NDP theme song hurry up and click here to listen to it! You’ll definitely fall in love with it.
With this, I hope that you guys have gotten a better understanding of Singapore!
I shall end this blog by wishing you guys a Happy National Day and also for COVID-19 to go away!
